LittleBigPlanet 2

Post by TRF on Sun Jan 23, 2011 5:49 pm

DEVELOPER | Media Molecule

PUBLISHER | Sony Computer Entertainment

GENRE | Platformer

PLATFORM(S) | Playstation 3

The original LittleBigPlanet released in 2008 to critical acclaim from both critics and fans alike. It very quickly became one of the premier games for user generated content, and today, the term "user generated content" is synonymous with "LittleBigPlanet". Flash forward to 2011. LittleBigPlanet 2, developed by Media Molecule and published by Sony, is out and it's better than its predecessor in every way, shape, and form.

LittleBigPlanet 2 continues the story of Sackboy as he traverses Craftworld in an effort to stop the Negativitron, an evil vacuum that's sucking up all of the towns and cities right off the face of Craftworld. The story mode contains thirty main levels plus a handful of bonus levels and versus levels. All of these levels can be tackled with up to three other people, but the versus levels obviously have a recommended two-player minimum. The versus levels include non-platforming segments such as racing and a Dance Dance Revolution inspired game type where you mash the on-screen buttons in quick succession. These segments are a fun break from the platforming, and they never make you feel like the flow of the story mode is being broken. As for the story itself, it's not particularly engaging. Much like the first, the focus is on the level design rather than the story, but the story entertaining enough and I've seen worse. The level design is great. Each level feels unique and memorable, so the variety of designs will keep you invested in the story mode.

The gameplay of LittleBigPlanet 2 is largely the same with a few new additions. Unfortunately, the platforming is still floaty, which is a drawback for me, but only a slight one. The trans-planar jumping in the game is less clunky, which is a plus because you'll be hopping between the background, middle, and foreground quite a bit. To spice up the traditional platforming formula, Media Molecule has added a slew of new items for Sackboy to use. The Jetpack, SCUBA gear, and Paintinator make a return from the first game, in addition to new items like the Grabinator, an item that lets the player pick up objects and throw them; the grappling hook, an item that allows the player to grab things from far away, swing from designated points, and raise and/or lower themselves into dangerous areas; the Controllinator, which lets players control an object like a vehicle using a unique control scheme designated by the level creator; and finally, the Creatinator, a hat worn by Sackboy that shoots objects designated by the level creator. Many of the story mode levels take advantage of these new items and you're bound to find levels online that utilize these items in an even better and more involved manner.

The level designer is the bread and butter of the LittleBigPlanet series, and it has been improved tenfold. It's obviously more in-depth than the level designer of the first game, but Media Molecule has actually made it more user-friendly at the same time. The tutorials are easily accessible, and while the level creator still presents some challenge, most people will find it easier to use than LittleBigPlanet's. If you're not the creative type, don't fret. There are over three million levels to choose from, including levels from the first game. What's better is that you can transfer your profile from LittleBigPlanet to LittleBigPlanet 2 and have access to all of your costumes, stickers, and decorations, as well as all of the levels and creators you Hearted in the first game. This makes it way easier to find and replay all of your favorite custom levels from LittleBigPlanet. However, I found it difficult going back to LittleBigPlanet's platforming levels due to the amount of creativity and variety within the LittleBigPlanet 2 level database. Within the first hour of browsing the level database, I played an isometric-twin stick shooter, Simon Says, a gallery shooter, Pac-Man, basketball, and tower defense. The potential that this level creator presents to the player is mind-boggling and keeps the game fresh all the time.

Media Molecule has shown developers everywhere how a sequel should be done. In an industry full of rehashed sequels, it's great to see a developer make their sequel stand out against the original. Media Molecule has really outdone themselves with the game, and I could not be happier with the finished product. Is it perfect? No: the platforming is still floaty; the level creator is still a little complicated, albeit less so than that of the first game; and, the game sports some annoying bugs that need to be ironed out as soon as possible. However, those are minor gripes that don't do much to detract from the massive amounts of enjoyment this game is providing me. Playstation 3 gamers rejoice: January is yours. LittleBigPlanet 2 is a great way to kick off 2011 for the Playstation 3, and hopefully will be followed by great games on all platforms. Will any of these future games be able to top LittleBigPlanet 2? It's anyone's guess, but I do know that LittleBigPlanet 2 has already set the bar for Game of the Year in 2011.

Personally I like the platforming in "LittleBigPlanet". Don't get all the hate that it's been getting?

I think it's too floaty (as explained in the review), and you never get that solid landing. You were always kinda slidey on the landing.

I mean, I always thought that made sense since Sackoy is a sack doll after all. Yeah the platforming isn't perfect, but I like how it was different from other platformers. Even though there isn't much to it.

Regardless of whether or not it makes sense, it still sucks.

I mean, you can have your opinion on a game, but saying LBP2 sucks, as a platformer, is completely absurd.

How so? The platforming is bad in the game, but it doesn't make the game any less fun.

The platforming in LBP sucks. LBP isn't a great game because of the platforming. It's a great game because of the creation tools.

LBP - Creation Tools = Shitty ass game

I wouldn't say shitty, but definitely not AAA.

I am madly in love with Blast Radius. It could be a $10 downloadable game in and of itself.

Personally I enjoy the game without using the creation tools. Making levels is a bit too complicated for me. And I simply don't have the time to create a level. I like playing story mode, and how challenging it is the farther you get. And playing other people's levels is quite fun aswell. Just knowing how people take the time and be creative on these levels adds a unique replay value to it.
